Agricultural Water Demand in Guadalquivir River (2005 Value vs. 2015 Scenario) AgEcon
Mesa-Jurado, Maria A.; Berbel, Julio; Piston, Juan Maximo.
This paper reviews the application of a scenario for the 2015 agricultural policy and markets for the irrigated agriculture in Europe. Scenarios for irrigated agriculture 2015 are described in detail including Reformed CAP and how biofuel impacts demand. A model for irrigation water demand is applied at the basin level for the Guadalquivir River (Southern Spain). The methodology is based upon residual value of water and it combines budget and farm analysis at municipality level, with the Guadalquivir basin divided at 50 counties where 24 possible crops are selected and adapted specifically to each county yield and costs. The result is a comparative analysis between actual level of water use and value, and 2015 scenario at county level and later aggregated...

ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES ON CONSTRUCTING A COMPOSITE INDICATOR TO MEASURE AGRICULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY AgEcon
Gomez-Limon, Jose Antonio; Riesgo, Laura.
The aim of this paper is to carry out a comparative analysis of alternative methods on constructing composite indicators to measure global sustainability of the agricultural sector. This comparison is implemented empirically on the irrigated agriculture of the Duero basin (Spain) as a case study. For this purpose, this research uses a dataset of indicators previously calculated for different farm-types and policy scenarios. The results allow to establish a hierarchy of the policy scenarios on the basis of the level of sustainability achieved. Furthermore, analyzing the heterogeneity of different farms-types in each scenario, is also possible to determine the main features of the most sustainable farms in each case. All this information is useful in order...

IMPLAN UNDERSTATES AGRICULTURAL INPUT-OUTPUT MULTIPLIERS: AN APPLICATION TO POTENTIAL AGRICULTURAL/GREEN INDUSTRY DROUGHT IMPACTS IN COLORADO AgEcon
McKean, John R.; Spencer, William P..
Synthesized input-output models are widely used by industry and government economists. The IMPLAN program is popular because it provides user access to the base data so that modifications can be made. The Washington survey-based model and IMPLAN for Washington State are compared, and differences in multipliers are traced to differences in final payments leakages. An adjustment technique for IMPLAN is demonstrated. An application is made to a Colorado potential drought impact analysis. More than 51,000 part- and full-time jobs and $1.6 billion of household income are at stake in the Colorado farm and "green industry" sectors.

Introducing Different Land Uses (Irrigated and Non-Irrigated) in Policy Analysis Modelling for Mediterranean Countries AgEcon
Casado, Jose Maria; Gracia, Azucena.
The arable crop sector in Spain is highly dependent of the Community subsidies and account for 33% of total transfers received by the Community. Then, it is expected that the introduction of the Single Farm Payment (SFP) will drive important changes in the arable crop production in Spain. The quantitative assessment of the SFP impacts on the arable crop sector in Spain is the overall objective of this paper. To achieve this goal, an econometric, dynamic, multi-product and partial equilibrium commodity model has been built disaggregating between irrigated and non-irrigated land use for cereals called Spanish Econometric Simulation of Agricultural Policies (SESAP). Results indicated that the introduction of the SFP has only induced considerable changes...

Giovanelli,Luan B.; Oliveira,Rubens A.; Oliveira-Filho,Jair C.; Baptestini,Júlio C. M.; Delazari,Fábio T.; Sediyama,Gilberto C..
ABSTRACT The choice for the most appropriate method to estimate evapotranspiration depends on the availability of meteorological data, required level of precision and cost of equipment acquisition. For this estimate, the Irrigameter is simple to operate, precise and economically viable to farmers. In addition, it collaborates in the application of the necessary water depth to crops, thus avoiding unnecessary energy consumption, environmental degradation, and increasing crop yield and improving crop quality. In this context, the objective of this research was to estimate the reference evapotranspiration using the Irrigameter, for the climatic conditions of the Southern Tocantins state, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized with...

Soil Compressibility under Irrigated Perennial and Annual Crops in a Semi-Arid Environment Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Watanabe,Rafaela; Figueiredo,Getulio Coutinho; Silva,Álvaro Pires da; Neves,Júlio César Lima; Oliveira,Teogenes Senna de.
ABSTRACT In irrigated soils, a continuous state of high moisture reduces resistance of the soil to applied external forces, favouring compaction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility to compaction of developed calcareous soils in irrigated annual and perennial cropping systems of the Apodi Plateau, located in the Brazilian semi-arid region. Four areas of irrigated crops were evaluated: banana after two (B2) and 15 (B15) years cultivation, pasture (P), and a corn and beans succession (MB), as well as the reference areas for soil quality and corresponding natural vegetation (NVB2, NVB15, NVP and NVMB). Samples were collected at layers of 0.00-0.10 and 0.20-0.30 m; and for B2 and B15, samples were collected in the row and inter-row spaces....

The impact of reforming the Common Agricultural Policy on the sustainability of the irrigated area of Central Italy. An empirical assessment by means of a Positive Mathematical Programming model AgEcon
Cortignani, Raffaele; Severini, Simone.
The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is a major driver of the environmental and social sustainability of the agriculture in the European Union (EU). Under the 2003 CAP reform, most direct payments to agricultural producers were decoupled from production. This work assesses the possible impact of the CAP reform on the sustainability of an irrigated area of Central Italy with particular attention being paid to decoupling. The analysis has been conducted using the Positive Mathematical Programming (PMP) method that directly estimates the cost function parameters by imposing the first-order conditions of the farm model under consideration. The analysis assesses the impact of the CAP reform on farm cropping patterns, water and chemical use, labour use and...

Turning Water into Carbon: Carbon sequestration vs. water flow in the Murray-Darling Basin AgEcon
Schrobback, Peggy; Adamson, David; Quiggin, John C..
Large scale forest plantations in the Murray-Darling Basin may be embraced as a carbon sequestration mechanism under a Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme. However, increased tree plantation will be associated with reduced inflows to river systems because of increased transpiration, interception and evaporation. Therefore, an unregulated change in land management is most likely to have a dramatic impact on the water availability. This will exacerbate the impacts of climate change projected in the Garnaut Review. This paper examines the implications of unrestricted changes in land use. These results should suggest the true costs to society from carbon sequestration by determining the tradeoffs between timber production and agricultural products.

Use of PVC pipes to determine bulk density for irrigation management Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Matsinhe,Daniel Zefanias; Pereira,Silvio Bueno; Oliveira,Rubens Alves de; Assis,Igor Rodrigues de; Oliveira,Reginaldo Miranda.
ABSTRACT Irrigation has a great importance in the production of food, and it is responsible for consuming a large part of the water used by human activities. This makes the rational management of water use fundamental for sustainable food production. For this purpose, the determination of bulk density is important and needs to be obtained with the simplest, least onerous methods possible, while maintaining precision and accuracy. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the use of PVC pipes of different dimensions to determine bulk density. For comparison purposes, the volumetric ring, paraffin clod, beaker and excavation methods were also used. Deformed and undisturbed soil samples of different granulometries were collected at the depths of...

Valoracion del agua de riego por el metodo de precios quasi-hedonicos: aplicacion al Guadalquivir AgEcon
Berbel, Julio; Mesa, Pascual.
ABSTRACT The valuation of natural resources is a tool used for improving allocation and management of water resources. This research proposes a quasi-hedonic approach as a...
